  • Highlight of my week and I missed it

Date: 2010.02.07 | Category: desert, links!, videos | Response: 0

On a normal year of which I’ve had 2 in the past 8, Super Bowl Sunday is always the highlight of my week. This year, as I spend it in the desert, I missed out on two pieces of the puzzle: commercials and beer. Unfortunately, I fell asleep earlier today and missed out on the beer. They had a special mission to Iraq and brought enough beer so that everyone could have two of them and I fell asleep. I fell asleep.

I did catch the commercials courtesy of YouTube. Here is my favorite one (in case you missed them too).

This one holds a special place in my heart –

  • I should be doing something more important

Date: 2009.06.27 | Category: Life as we know it | Response: 0

It’s a struggle to stay occupied on the weekends when the rest of the time zone is sleeping. I have a few things that I would like to do but I need the freedom to make as much noise as I want and I really need the warming glow of the sun above me. Sitting around is hard to do and it starts to wear on me physically after a while. What else can I do? The dogs are sleeping. Jessica is sleeping.

Luckily, I have one last weekend in the dark and a few more days of work and I can resume my normal life. I’ve been watching TV but I think I’m going clean out the garage. Sounds boring doesn’t it? At least it’s a way to kill some time without making too much noise.

We have both noticed that we spend too much time in front of the TV so we’ve made an effort to spend a little more time with our noses buried in books. I’m working on a new book by Henry Rollins and a book about Home Brewing. Henry has always been an inspiration and I always get a kick out of his books – its a shame he has been avoiding me. I don’t stalk him per se but I feel that he schedules his shows to avoid me. If I am in the desert he is in the states touring. If I in the states he is in the desert doing a USO show. If I am in Canada for the weekend he is in the Seattle area. Lately, I haven’t been able to win. He doesn’t have much coming up on the calendar for this year but I hope some more dates show up soon. I’m reading the home brewing book because I caught an article about making cider… strong cider. Our 2nd annual Halloween party is coming down the pipeline and I thought it would be a cool idea to make our own cider instead of making death grog like we did last year. Research got me on a bunny trail and soon after down the rabbit trail I went and I found that making cider and beer aren’t that far from each other. I only need a few more pieces of equipment to make beer so if I can squirrel away the money Jessica will hopefully give me the go ahead. It sounds fairly simple and it could actually be fun. We’ll see how it goes.

  • The post holiday recovery period

Date: 2008.12.27 | Category: Life as we know it | Response: 0

Jessica and I are recovering from a bout of the SARS/Bird Flu/West Nile Virus and haven’t felt up to doing much. We’re fairly sure that one of her friends was the original carrier of the crud and infected the both of us. I can only hope that I didn’t pass it on to anyone that came over to our house on Christmas Eve. The worst of the crap is over in the first 60 hours but I expect it to take a full week before I feel like a regular human.

I’ve got next week off while Jessica heads back to work on Monday. I’ve got a few tasks to take care of around the house but some of them are dependent on the rest of the snow and ice melting. I can deal with the rain but I need to be able to get a little traction out there. Most of the Christmas decorations are already down and stored away in the basement. The only remaining decorations are the tree sitting in our living room and the lights outside of the house. We’re planning on taking the tree to the backyard and flaming it later today. We expect the tree to last about 45 seconds before all that is left is a pile of ashes.

I’m off standby so I’m a happy guy – I can do what I want when I want. The only stipulations that I have are to check into work on Monday and Wednesday next week. Other than that, I’m a free man. I guess that means beer, Madden, and sitting on the couch for hours on end. What you’re feeling right now is envy.

  • Cheap beer

    Date: 2008.08.12 | Category: links! | Response: 2

Once in a while I want to drink a beer and once in a while I hate my tastebuds. When those two events occur on the same day I slum it and drink cheap beer. A couple of weeks ago I went out to a bar for a friends birthday where I decided I would drink the worst of the worst. I started off with a Rainier – oh holy hell – it tasted like spilled beer thats been cooking in the sun for eight hours smells. I finished the night off with a good ole PBR. Its a massive can of beer for only a few dollars – the flavor was weak but it was beer. I caught an interesting article that reminisces about the cheap beer from our past – I saw a few on that list that I’ve had and many (thank god) that I haven’t. Feel free to check it out at Salon.

Oh – here’s my quote of the day – Drinking may cause memory loss. Or worse, memory loss

I have not posted in quite a while, for I have been wreck for the last month. I am trying to get about 3 quarters worth of stuff done in half of one. It’s been crazy. I have been spending many night with only 3 hours of sleep and a lot of time studying. It’s almost over. One week left. We’ll see if I can pull it off.

This weekend should be fun. We are going camping with my sister and her husband, Leanne and Jeff. We are headed for the ocean, and I can’t wait. It will be nice to have a little bit of relax time but I will be taking my homework with me. Booooo school, booooo homework, HOORAY BEER! HOORAY CAMPING!!!

    Let’s see if I survive this week…..

  • This could really hurt him

Date: 2008.06.10 | Category: Life as we know it | Response: 0

What happens tonight could really hurt him, but I have a feeling that it won’t hurt that bad. One of our mutual friends, Matt, is celebrating his 21st birthday party. I talked to my boss and I am going to take half of the day off tomorrow (the first half) so that I can attend the shenanigans. He may feel awful tomorrow but its not going to kill him – it’s an initiation rite that many of us have been through and almost all have survived without any long lasting injury. I don’t expect him to last long but I’ll be sure to take pictures of what happens – whether he wants me to or not.

  • What a week

Date: 2008.05.22 | Category: Life as we know it, desert, photos, videos | Response: 1

In Iraq I really only knew a few things to be true – I knew that it was going to be hot during the day and I also knew that it was going to be dark and noisy at night.

    .
When I finally left I rode out on dark and noisy military transport – a continuation of a theme. My camera doesn’t like extremely shaky environments full of low light conditions but I think I captured enough for you to understand how enjoyable the ride actually was for us. If you look at the bottom picture, cram yourself into a closet with 4-6 other people, crank up the volume to the maximum level on your speakers, and sit/stand there for three hours you’ll have a slight understanding of how “comfortable” it was

I’ve uploaded a few more pictures from my time in Iraq in the gallery – link removed

I got home and met a fantastic girl in the airport – well – I it wasn’t the first time I’ve met her but it had been quite a while since I had last seen her.

    admin edit – photo removed

We went home and she showed me around our house – where we had the lengthy task of unpacking looming on the horizon.

Luckily – I’m a task oriented guy and we got starting working at the task so it could be done – and so we could look forward to the party we were to have that weekend.

The house is complete with a garage and two dogs in the backyard – one of which will flop around like a fish if you ignore her.

We had a party and it was a great time despite me knowing only a handful of the people there – I met quite of few of Jessica’s friends but there names are already a mystery to me – damn short term memory.

  • Leaving

Date: 2007.12.31 | Category: Life as we know it, desert | Response: 0

Leaving her behind was one of the hardest things I’ve done in years. We left for the airport early this morning and quickly found out that my original flight plan was not going to work. Instead of flying through Denver to get to Baltimore we flew direct to Dulles and took a cab to Baltimore (where our hotel is). Travel wise it worked out fairly well and we ended up leaving 20 minutes after our originally scheduled flight departed. The other option was to wait around till 2PM – the other guys wanted to get to our destination and waiting to leave can really tug on your heart. Sometimes its just better to get it over with – leaving sucks, being gone still sucks but you can avoid thinking about it.

So – here I am in Baltimore on New Years Eve and I have nothing to do. I could go out and buy beer but I’d end up drinking alone – then again, if I went to a bar I’d still end up drinking alone. Oh well, such is my life.

  • The Game

Date: 2007.11.19 | Category: Life as we know it | Response: 0

So, as I had previously mentioned I was going to the Bears game. We both got dressed up in our game appropriate garb and headed to Qwest field.

    admin edit – photo removed

On the way to the stadium I received my fair share of heckling and Jessica received a fair share of dirty looks for consorting with the enemy. We found our seats that were way way up in the stratosphere but at least I was at the game and I could see the whole field.

    admin edit – photo removed

The people around us were mostly locals and they really didn’t like my presence – mostly due to the team that I was supporting. I took it all in good humor and still had a great time. I noticed that USAA was giving away free seat upgrades if you registered in their contest so I sent a text message away and thought that was the end of it.

I was standing in line for the bathroom after the first quarter when my phone rang. I didn’t recognize the phone number let alone the area code but I still answered the phone. The guy on the other end told me that I had won! I was almost yelling into the phone and everyone around me was looking at me wondering what the heck had happened. They told me to go to the first floor in the SW corner. I was near the upper deck in the NE corner. I had a trek and little time to make it to my destination. I called Jessica and told her the great news. The people around her weren’t quite as happy as she was because well… I was the enemy and I was a bears fan. She ran down from her seat and left everything behind.

I ran the entire way. I got the tickets and found out that were in section 108 row F. We were on the 40 yard line on the Bears side of the field and we were only six rows from the field. I could not believe my luck. Check out the video to see our view from the field.

Both of us were giddy as heck for the rest of the game and we had a blast.

I really wish the Bears would have won the game but I guess I can’t have everything. I still can’t believe that I won – it was the coolest gift ever.
