My parents were out last week and I took a bunch of photos. Rather than filling the gallery with a bunch of photos that will never be viewed I decided to share only my favorites. You can still check out the full sized versions in the gallery by clicking on the pop up icon (to the right of the camera icon). In no particular order of preference, here are the best photos from the week. You’ll notice that these are devoid of people because I’ve never been great at capturing natural expressions in good lighting. I may get one but I’ll seldom get two.

I took 8-9 versions of this shot and thought that this was the best out of all of them. If you look at the full version you’ll see some jaggies throughout the image. What I wouldn’t do for a DSLR. You won’t be able to see any of the artifacts at this resolution you see on your screen.

I wish this were taken in the wild (it would have been really cool), unfortunately, it was taken in an animal park. It was still quite cool to see this animal roaming “free.”

I took 7-8 shots of this eagle but found that my camera had a hard time dealing with the low light and gave me a bunch of noise. I ran this photo through a noise filter a few times resulting in this highly stylized photo. I like the outcome.

My opinion hasn’t changed in the past few months. I think Bluecoat is a horribly coded web filter that does a poor job of characterizing content. Much to my surprise, they have tweaked the algorithm and I’ve seen some noticable changes. First off, they no longer categorically block websites that have the word blog [...]

We all fight spam in one form or another be it snail mail, email, or comment spam. I’ve done a fairly good job at blocking out the email spam but and I can readily ignore the snail mail by throwing it in the trash. I haven’t had good luck blocking out the comment spam.

We had another sand storm – joy of joys! I decided to take a quick video so that you could see exactly what I’m living in. I was wondering how bad it was during the American “Dust Bowl” – shame we didn’t have video then. Oh well

BlueCoat, the web filter ran by the USAF, has caused me much aggravation since my arrival at Balad. I am not the only one that is feeling pain – everyone else is affected by this poorly written web filter. Recently, I discovered a way to circumvent the filter – RSS feeds. Techically, I’m accessing [...]

I live inside of a fenced and concrete walled compound. Blast walls and revetments surround every building on base. Sand bags can be found everywhere – they surround most of the buildings. Construction crews, scurrying around the base like ants, build new walls daily further fortifying the nearly impenetrable fortress. Larger buildings are fitted [...]

I woke yesterday and found not blue skies as I was used to but something much more sinister and disgusting. It was like the whole world was in a sepia filter and it had a strange color wash – we were in a brown world. The sky was being choked out by the dust [...]
