  • Highlight of my week and I missed it

Date: 2010.02.07 | Category: desert, links!, videos | Response: 0

On a normal year of which I’ve had 2 in the past 8, Super Bowl Sunday is always the highlight of my week. This year, as I spend it in the desert, I missed out on two pieces of the puzzle: commercials and beer. Unfortunately, I fell asleep earlier today and missed out on the beer. They had a special mission to Iraq and brought enough beer so that everyone could have two of them and I fell asleep. I fell asleep.

I did catch the commercials courtesy of YouTube. Here is my favorite one (in case you missed them too).

This one holds a special place in my heart –

And, because I hate autotune –

sorry about the formatting, I don’t know enough about wordpress themes to fix it

Jessica kicked me out of the house yesterday so that she could host a candle party. If she hadn’t kicked me out I surely would have left – no man wants to hang around when a candle party is in progress. So, I went down to Jeff’s house (Jessica’s bro-in-law) to watch some football. On the way there I had an unfortunate encounter with a police officer that left my bank account slightly drained. That would be the first time in nine years – I’ve been using the cruise control with increasing frequency since my encounter.

The first game was between the Titans and Jets. This should have been a decent game but the Titans didn’t bring their offensive unit. I think they put some people on the field but I don’t think they were playing the game. The game wasn’t interesting enough to draw out attention. For long periods of time Jeff and I concentrated on the back of our eyelids. In an NFL market, when the home team sells out, there is no other late game. You get the home team and whoever they might be playing. They call them blackout rules – and I’m not a fan. Yesterday, the only late game available was the Seahawks vs. the Redskins.

This year the Seahawks are woeful. They aren’t playing as bad as Detroit but they should be ashamed. Most of the Seahawks fans that I know are ashamed of their team. In fact, they have a hard time watching. All hope has been lost for this season. The Redskins have been playing some decent football this season but failed to get anything going yesterday. The commentators repeatedly called the game “a chess match.” In reality, it was an utter crap fest. Neither team could get a good offensive series and the play on both sides of the ball was sub par. The commentators surely didn’t need to hype up the game. The only people watching were the ones that couldn’t change the channel – there were no other options. They spent most of the time talking up the student vs. master battle (Zorn vs. Holmgren). If the only thing you’ve got to talk about is the coaches its a sure sign that the game is boring.

I can’t wait until the NFL ticket contract expires. I can only hope that the cable networks will make a bid and take it away from satellite. I’m not a fan of satellite and the NFL isn’t a big enough draw to get me to switch. I live in the pacific northwest and we are known for our rain – and pine trees. I have pine trees that block all view to the south and I live in a climate that isn’t conducive to satellite television. I have no options – save to wait until the contract expires – or the Seahawks get better.

This has got to be the best catch I’ve seen in a year – probably better than the catch made during the Giants game winning drive in the super bowl.

So, as I had previously mentioned I was going to the Bears game. We both got dressed up in our game appropriate garb and headed to Qwest field.

On the way to the stadium I received my fair share of heckling and Jessica received a fair share of dirty looks for consorting with the enemy. We found our seats that were way way up in the stratosphere but at least I was at the game and I could see the whole field.

The people around us were mostly locals and they really didn’t like my presence – mostly due to the team that I was supporting. I took it all in good humor and still had a great time. I noticed that USAA was giving away free seat upgrades if you registered in their contest so I sent a text message away and thought that was the end of it.

I was standing in line for the bathroom after the first quarter when my phone rang. I didn’t recognize the phone number let alone the area code but I still answered the phone. The guy on the other end told me that I had won! I was almost yelling into the phone and everyone around me was looking at me wondering what the heck had happened. They told me to go to the first floor in the SW corner. I was near the upper deck in the NE corner. I had a trek and little time to make it to my destination. I called Jessica and told her the great news. The people around her weren’t quite as happy as she was because well… I was the enemy and I was a bears fan. She ran down from her seat and left everything behind.

I ran the entire way. I got the tickets and found out that were in section 108 row F. We were on the 40 yard line on the Bears side of the field and we were only six rows from the field. I could not believe my luck. Check out the video to see our view from the field.

Both of us were giddy as heck for the rest of the game and we had a blast.

I really wish the Bears would have won the game but I guess I can’t have everything. I still can’t believe that I won – it was the coolest gift ever.

  • Seahawks and Da Bears

All week long, I have been fighting on eBay to win tickets the this Sunday’s Seahawk’s game. John is a HUGE fan of Da Bears, so I thought this would be an amazing Christmas present. So, after finally after 3 days of battling it out on eBay, I found myself with 2 tickets to the game, but up in the nose bleed section. John didn’t care at all. He had never been to an NFL game, so he was EXTREMELY excited  that not only was he going but he was going to see Da Bears. I was a little stressed out because I was unsure of the tickets. They took forever to get to me and when they came in an email I wasn’t sure they were real. Saturday Morning we woke super early and headed out to the game. We walked for a while from our parking spot and entered Quest Field with no problems. It was wiggle stick day so we got a souvenir  and walked about the field for a while. John was very sweet and bought me a pink Seahawks  scarf, and I love it! We found our seats, section 303 row U. They were pretty far up there. We grabbed some food, and came back to our seats. We saw an add that said “Hey, text this word to this number and USAA might upgrade your seats”, so we texted and gave our them our email. Of course there were hecklers about John’s Bears stuff but we got past all that and enjoyed the game.

After the first quarter John ran to the bathroom. Then I got a phone call, from John. He was very excited as he said “We won! We won!  We got upgraded tickets! Section 108, Row F!!!!”  It was AWESOME! We were in awe! The game was amazing and we had an awesome time! The only thing that could have gone better, John told me, was if Da Bears would have won, but hey it didn’t bother me at all!

I have a fantastic girlfriend who through many trials and tribulations acquired a pair of tickets to the Bears/Seahawks game. I have never been to an NFL game and I’ve obviously never seen the Bears play (in person). So, as you might guess, I’m excited about the whole deal. My nose will probably bleed throughout the course of the game because good tickets cost a fortune and because she isn’t made of money… yet, we’ll be sitting right below the rows that start with double letters (AA, AB, etc). Hopefully I’ll remember to grab my camera tomorrow and you’ll be able to see one of the few people brave enough to wear a Butkus jersey in the middle of Qwest Field.
