I should be doing something more important
It’s a struggle to stay occupied on the weekends when the rest of the time zone is sleeping. I have a few things that I would like to do but I need the freedom to make as much noise as I want and I really need the warming glow of the sun above me. Sitting around is hard to do and it starts to wear on me physically after a while. What else can I do? The dogs are sleeping. Jessica is sleeping.
Luckily, I have one last weekend in the dark and a few more days of work and I can resume my normal life. I’ve been watching TV but I think I’m going clean out the garage. Sounds boring doesn’t it? At least it’s a way to kill some time without making too much noise.
We have both noticed that we spend too much time in front of the TV so we’ve made an effort to spend a little more time with our noses buried in books. I’m working on a new book by Henry Rollins and a book about Home Brewing. Henry has always been an inspiration and I always get a kick out of his books – its a shame he has been avoiding me. I don’t stalk him per se but I feel that he schedules his shows to avoid me. If I am in the desert he is in the states touring. If I in the states he is in the desert doing a USO show. If I am in Canada for the weekend he is in the Seattle area. Lately, I haven’t been able to win. He doesn’t have much coming up on the calendar for this year but I hope some more dates show up soon. I’m reading the home brewing book because I caught an article about making cider… strong cider. Our 2nd annual Halloween party is coming down the pipeline and I thought it would be a cool idea to make our own cider instead of making death grog like we did last year. Research got me on a bunny trail and soon after down the rabbit trail I went and I found that making cider and beer aren’t that far from each other. I only need a few more pieces of equipment to make beer so if I can squirrel away the money Jessica will hopefully give me the go ahead. It sounds fairly simple and it could actually be fun. We’ll see how it goes.

The drivers outside are frightful
The weather over the next few days is the last of my worries. What worries me is my need to get around when the roads are full other people. The forecast calls for 6-20 inches of additional snow and we’ve still not seen a snowplow head down our street. The traffic has made a rut in the street down to the pavement but it is hardly an effective method of snow removal. Along with the snow we’re supposed to see sustained winds of 25mph with gusts of up to 90mph. Slippery roads and high winds do not mix. Add people that are unaccustomed to poor driving conditions to the mix and things could get a little hairy.
In other news – we’re back to three dogs in the back yard. Raisin is back into the mix and she is already wearing out the two boys. The three of them have been having a blast and she has been the catalyst that has gotten them all to play. Lick is a bit of a grouch and Duke is always looking for someone to play with and she wants to play with everyone – whether they choose to play or not. In the past we’ve noticed that Lick has been covered with drool while the other two were completely dry – I have a feeling they were ganging up on him. He needs someone to beat the crap out of him once in a while.
Jessica and I just came home from the Ammo Christmas party. Last year it was a bit of a drag but this year the tension was down and everybody was in a relatively cheery mood. 70% of the people have been swapped out since the previous party so it was interesting to see all of the new faces. What surprised me the most was the number of children that were under 4. There had to have been at least 10 kids there – my lieutenant asked me when I was going to have kids – I’d have to get hitched to do that.
We’ve got some cooking to do so we’ve got to trundle off to the store and hope to avoid those that don’t know how to drive but still insist that they do – at 4mph.

Halloween
So last weekend John and I had our first Halloween party. We had spent all week getting food and decorations ready. It actually turned out pretty cool. We had the new beer pong table, spooky treats, and witches brew. Leanne and Jeff were great and made 100 jello shots for the party. It was really fun ( what I could remember of it anyway) and it seemed that everyone else had a pretty good time too.
Costumes were encouraged so I was really excited when everyone came dressed up. John and I decided to be zombies. We acquired our costumes from thrift stores and makeup from Wal-mart and they turned out really cool, if I do say so myself.
Here are some pictures from the party and the rest you will find HERE.

Can’t sleep, too much time and talent, and zombies
Par for the course during the first week of mid-shift is an inability to sleep throughout the “night.” I only got four hours of sleep and I’m wide awake now. There is no going back to sleep and I will be exhausted by the time I go to bed tomorrow. Luckily, day two always turns out better and I’m able to get a solid six hours of sleep.
This guy (video below) has far too much time and talent on his hands. Bravo!
Jessica and I had our party and we dressed as zombies for Halloween. The makeup took quite a while but I think the effect was pretty darn good. Yes – we like brains!

Halloween

It’s 11:46 and Jessica and I still have an hour left of prep tonight for our party tomorrow. We’ve got a bit of prep to do tomorrow but most of the hard work is done. It will take us a few hours to get into our costumes – it should be fun. More photos will follow – when the hangover goes away.

Can you smell it? It’s the weekend
I’m mere hours away from a respite away from work and away from responsibility. I don’t mind work, in fact, I actually like what I do but I really enjoy my time away from the office. Weekends and leave fantastic because they are generally unstructured. We always have something happening but there is so much free time I don’t know how someone wouldn’t like it. Leanne’s birthday is this weekend – I think she is turning the big three-o so we’re going to spend some time in the “Roy” area on Saturday and we’ve got a little cleaning to do but aside from that it’s all free time. I can smell the weekend and it puts a smile on my face.

This could really hurt him
What happens tonight could really hurt him, but I have a feeling that it won’t hurt that bad. One of our mutual friends, Matt, is celebrating his 21st birthday party. I talked to my boss and I am going to take half of the day off tomorrow (the first half) so that I can attend the shenanigans. He may feel awful tomorrow but its not going to kill him – it’s an initiation rite that many of us have been through and almost all have survived without any long lasting injury. I don’t expect him to last long but I’ll be sure to take pictures of what happens – whether he wants me to or not.

What a week
In Iraq I really only knew a few things to be true – I knew that it was going to be hot during the day and I also knew that it was going to be dark and noisy at night.
.
When I finally left I rode out on dark and noisy military transport – a continuation of a theme. My camera doesn’t like extremely shaky environments full of low light conditions but I think I captured enough for you to understand how enjoyable the ride actually was for us. If you look at the bottom picture, cram yourself into a closet with 4-6 other people, crank up the volume to the maximum level on your speakers, and sit/stand there for three hours you’ll have a slight understanding of how “comfortable” it was

I’ve uploaded a few more pictures from my time in Iraq in the gallery – link removed
I got home and met a fantastic girl in the airport – well – I it wasn’t the first time I’ve met her but it had been quite a while since I had last seen her.

We went home and she showed me around our house – where we had the lengthy task of unpacking looming on the horizon.

Luckily – I’m a task oriented guy and we got starting working at the task so it could be done – and so we could look forward to the party we were to have that weekend.
The house is complete with a garage and two dogs in the backyard – one of which will flop around like a fish if you ignore her.We had a party and it was a great time despite me knowing only a handful of the people there – I met quite of few of Jessica’s friends but there names are already a mystery to me – damn short term memory.
