  • I should be doing something more important

Date: 2009.06.27 | Category: Life as we know it | Response: 0

It’s a struggle to stay occupied on the weekends when the rest of the time zone is sleeping. I have a few things that I would like to do but I need the freedom to make as much noise as I want and I really need the warming glow of the sun above me. Sitting around is hard to do and it starts to wear on me physically after a while. What else can I do? The dogs are sleeping. Jessica is sleeping.

Luckily, I have one last weekend in the dark and a few more days of work and I can resume my normal life. I’ve been watching TV but I think I’m going clean out the garage. Sounds boring doesn’t it? At least it’s a way to kill some time without making too much noise.

We have both noticed that we spend too much time in front of the TV so we’ve made an effort to spend a little more time with our noses buried in books. I’m working on a new book by Henry Rollins and a book about Home Brewing. Henry has always been an inspiration and I always get a kick out of his books – its a shame he has been avoiding me. I don’t stalk him per se but I feel that he schedules his shows to avoid me. If I am in the desert he is in the states touring. If I in the states he is in the desert doing a USO show. If I am in Canada for the weekend he is in the Seattle area. Lately, I haven’t been able to win. He doesn’t have much coming up on the calendar for this year but I hope some more dates show up soon. I’m reading the home brewing book because I caught an article about making cider… strong cider. Our 2nd annual Halloween party is coming down the pipeline and I thought it would be a cool idea to make our own cider instead of making death grog like we did last year. Research got me on a bunny trail and soon after down the rabbit trail I went and I found that making cider and beer aren’t that far from each other. I only need a few more pieces of equipment to make beer so if I can squirrel away the money Jessica will hopefully give me the go ahead. It sounds fairly simple and it could actually be fun. We’ll see how it goes.

  • It's almost like an interpretive dance

So John and I saw this today and laughed the whole time! This is an amazing video and even though john and I loved it it’s sad to think that nothing like this would be seen on prime time TV today.

But here it is for you to watch and enjoy.

  • Football

Jessica kicked me out of the house yesterday so that she could host a candle party. If she hadn’t kicked me out I surely would have left – no man wants to hang around when a candle party is in progress. So, I went down to Jeff’s house (Jessica’s bro-in-law) to watch some football. On the way there I had an unfortunate encounter with a police officer that left my bank account slightly drained. That would be the first time in nine years – I’ve been using the cruise control with increasing frequency since my encounter.

The first game was between the Titans and Jets. This should have been a decent game but the Titans didn’t bring their offensive unit. I think they put some people on the field but I don’t think they were playing the game. The game wasn’t interesting enough to draw out attention. For long periods of time Jeff and I concentrated on the back of our eyelids. In an NFL market, when the home team sells out, there is no other late game. You get the home team and whoever they might be playing. They call them blackout rules – and I’m not a fan. Yesterday, the only late game available was the Seahawks vs. the Redskins.

This year the Seahawks are woeful. They aren’t playing as bad as Detroit but they should be ashamed. Most of the Seahawks fans that I know are ashamed of their team. In fact, they have a hard time watching. All hope has been lost for this season. The Redskins have been playing some decent football this season but failed to get anything going yesterday. The commentators repeatedly called the game “a chess match.” In reality, it was an utter crap fest. Neither team could get a good offensive series and the play on both sides of the ball was sub par. The commentators surely didn’t need to hype up the game. The only people watching were the ones that couldn’t change the channel – there were no other options. They spent most of the time talking up the student vs. master battle (Zorn vs. Holmgren). If the only thing you’ve got to talk about is the coaches its a sure sign that the game is boring.

I can’t wait until the NFL ticket contract expires. I can only hope that the cable networks will make a bid and take it away from satellite. I’m not a fan of satellite and the NFL isn’t a big enough draw to get me to switch. I live in the pacific northwest and we are known for our rain – and pine trees. I have pine trees that block all view to the south and I live in a climate that isn’t conducive to satellite television. I have no options – save to wait until the contract expires – or the Seahawks get better.

  • Democratic convention preempts my fun

Date: 2008.08.26 | Category: Life as we know it, ahh the news | Response: 0

Its eight o’clock and I want to watch TV. The Olympics, along with some obscure and nearly unwatchable sports, are gone and back is the regular television schedule. Unfortunately, on the second night on Olympics free television I’ve found that everything that I want to watch has been preempted by the Democratic National Convention. Hillary is jabbering at the moment about blue collared Americans – she hasn’t really mentioned wall street employees and members of the financial sector – how odd for a Democrat to make such a major gaffe. Uh oh… here comes the let’s think about the children line. What a trite and tired line – I love politics but come on. This is why I love the internet. I can get a full transcript of this speech in a couple of hours when I’ll have the time to properly dissect it. Most of us are only watching this because there is nothing else on at the moment – we really don’t care. In fact, the overwhelming majority of us are already decided and only a minority can be considered swing voters. As a swing voter I think they’re making a mistake. They really don’t want to piss off a potential voter by preempting my regular television schedule. It’s time to pack it up DNC – go to bed – I’ve got some TV to watch.

  • Work, life, oil, the environment, and the economy

Date: 2008.04.20 | Category: ahh the news, links! | Response: 0

If you’ve been paying attention – we’re paying more for many of the things that we use daily. The rising cost of oil impacts the cost of transportation, consumer goods, and food. Companies are trying to cut costs wherever possible while trying to retain the most talented and hardworking individuals. Some would blame the war for our economy that is in a downturn. Everything is linked – I read a few articles and found myself hitting CTRL-B five times and I thought it was worth sharing. Each is tied to the other; lets hope that I can explain what I mean.

According to recent polls many Americans have stated that they have felt that it has been much harder to “get ahead.” Our standards of “ahead” have changed since the days when my father was growing up in the 60′s. I’m going to guess that getting an education, having shelter, a good family life, and something (anything except mustard greens) to eat. Times were tough but if you were to persevere you could make a better life for the next generation and hopefully yourself in the process. Now we demand consumer goods as a measure of how well we are doing. Measures of American success include an car (or two), a house, high speed internet, and cable TV. Without these things many believe that they are failing in the race to get ahead. We’re demanding more than ever while overlooking the basics. I’m going to go out on a limb but maybe we should be looking for a little less – check out the full text at the Washington Post.

Some who claim they are having trouble would point the finger at the ever rising costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the increasing price of gasoline. While the cost of the war far exceeds most if not all of the original estimates we’ve paid for most of it with credit. Its been added to our national debt and will probably remain for years to come – the price of oil is increasing rapidly due to increased consumption in America and in south east Asia in places like China and India. Companies outside of OPEC control have made few if any significant discoveries in recent years. It takes a considerable amount of time to find a sizable cache of carbon deposits, negotiate drilling rights, and remove them for refining and delivery. Simply put, even if there are reserves available we may not find them before demand outstrips supply. We have plenty of oil to last for the next 20 years but there has been rampant speculation of what will happen if consumption continues to increase at the current rates. If we cannot find additional reserves we might have a problem – we might find ourselves in a global energy crisis. (I hate the word crisis because I feel as if I am on a cable news network where EVERYTHING is a crisis). The futures market has seen this and that is why we are experiencing the recent increase in oil prices – sure – they could have seen this years ago but its happening now. I wonder if they took off their rose colored glasses at some point in the last two years and saw the error of their ways – the end result of their revelation is that we’re paying for it.

We can do our part to consume less but its going to take a concentrated effort. If we were to determine car insurance premiums based upon the number of miles that we drive we could leverage our savings against those who drive everywhere. They would be forced to consume less simply because they would be unable to afford all of the driving. Enacting immediate changes in MPG requirements and subsidizing companies that reduce consumption while taxing those that use heavily could help. The economic impact of such a decision can hardly be measured by me, but, it’s on the table.

Everything is tied together – change is going to impact our ability to “get by” and may impact our quality of life. We cannot continue to increase consumption at current rates or we are going to see a bubble – a big bubble – and only the those with the most resources in the end will be able to survive.

  • The Writer’s Strike

    Date: 2008.04.07 | Category: videos | Response: 0

Most of you suffered through the television writers strike – that is, if you’re the type of person that watches television. Late night shows were struck hard as they had to rely on the creativity of the host to get some laughs. One of my favorite late night hosts is Conan O’Brien – he’s just silly – and he makes me laugh. I can’t give you an overall synopsis of the writing during the writer’s strike because I simply don’t know. But, I can show you this clip because there was some comedy gold during the strike. Watch, enjoy, and laugh.

  • I might as well be WORSHIPING SATAN!

Date: 2007.11.16 | Category: I was too lazy to organize these | Response: 0

BEWARE OF ME YOU GOOD CHRISTIAN PEOPLE FOR I AM THE ULTIMATE SINNER, I MIGHT AS WELL BE THE ANTI CHRIST!

Someone today felt it necessary to send me this video. As I watched it I suddenly realized that I am going to go to hell for living the life I’m living. Before I explain you must see the video:

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgJ-w5GSaYo]

Now, I guess I didn’t realize that being a “Good Christian” and having a “relationship with Jesus” meant that I need to resort back to the times without women’s rights or advanced technology. I didn’t realize that the simple acts of enjoy T.V. and sports were a one way ticket to hell. I didn’t realize that it is not MY place as a WOMAN to work. That it is my duty to be a slave for my husband, raise his children by myself, and have sex with him every night to get the chance to heaven. I didn’t know that by me knowing and wanting to know the things that happen in my community, state, county and world that I was sinning. I also wasn’t aware that making something of yourself and having nice things was such a terrible thing. I didn’t know that if you were successful, happy, working, listening to the radio, reading the news, going to sports games, using the internet, watching T.V., and getting junk mail were all things brought on by the DEVIL HIMSELF and by doing these things, it automaticlly means that I have no realtionship with my God.

Sometimes I really just can’t believe what people are trying to turn religion and Faith into. It really breaks my heart.

  • t.v. rules our lives.

Date: 2007.10.03 | Category: I was too lazy to organize these | Response: 0

There has not been much going one these days. Saturday John and I went to a very nice dinner. We ate at Salty’s on Alki and it was the best place I’ve ever been to. The food was amazing, and the chocolate cake, to die for. I got my wish of a window seat and it was an amazing view of the Seattle skyline at sundown. I had a great time.

I’ve been feeling sick this week.l I guess it’s that time of year for the cold bug to make it’s way around to everyone. This has resulted in me not wanting to do much. So John and I get to spend time doing what all Americans love to do, watch T.V. On Mondays we watch Chuck, Heros, and Journeyman while recording 2.5 Men, How I met your Mom and Big Bang Theory. Then Tuesdays we watch Beauty and the Geek, House and Eureka. Wednesday I have Gossip Girl, Pushing Daises, Bionic Woman, and ‘Till Death. Then we have Thursdays we have Smallville, CSI and Survivor China. And to finish it off on Friday, we have Friday Night Lights.

So as you can see we devote most of our time to T.V. Thank God for DVR.
